Growing up in rural Minnesota fall always brought around many a man’s favorite time of the year. Hunting season.
November usually brought around my lest favorite time of the year as a child. Firearm season. Which was my least favorite because my mother would keep us inside for nearly an entire month because of it. As an adult who’s handled a firearm I get it, as a child I understood the why of it all but I didn’t like it.
Now I have never actually hunted. However, as a teenager and young adult I did participate in part of hunting season. Mainly because grandpa used me as a spare deer and turkey scout at times or on occasion took me to follow a blood trail during bow season. Outside of that and the rare occurrence of helping of cleaning a deer I’ve never hunted.
Although I did get an eight point buck back in the Fall of 2019 when it ran in front of my Subaru.
I was driving home in rural Minnesota late at night when I had just turned onto the road from the main county highway when I saw the car in the other lane flash their headlights at me. Which made me wonder if my high beams were on, they were not. What they were trying to warn me about was that they had seen the doe run across the road and a buck was likely behind it.
Thankfully I was going under 40 miles per hour — so I came out of this fine— because all of a sudden a 300 lbs monster of a buck was smashing in the front end of my car. It was the end of both the buck and of my Subaru.
That deer was made into jerked afterwards and I was told he was not delicious.
So while I have never and probably will never actually hunt I have gotten a deer. And quite an impressive one at that.
