Drivers & motorcyclists encouraged to practice safe habits

With warmer weather, more motorcyclists are returning to the road - and safety is a shared responsibility. Local public health and public safety partners remind motorists and riders to stay alert, practice safe habits and look out for one another this season.

Motorist safety tips

• Always look twice before making a turn, entering a roadway or changing lanes.
• Double check blind spots and give motorcyclists plenty of space by maintaining at least a 3‑second following distance.
• Stay alert, avoid distractions and drive at safe speeds.

Motorcyclist safety tips

• Stay focused and keep a 3‑second following distance.

• Ride sober and watch your speed.
• Wear full protective gear, including a DOT‑approved helmet.
• Keep your driving skills sharp – sign up for a formal rider training course.
• Slow down and look through curves.

Preliminary motorcycle crash data for Rice County included one motorcycle fatality and nine serious crashes in 2024 and two serious crashes in 2025. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcyclists represented 15% of all traffic fatalities in the U.S. in 2024.

Between Memorial Day and Labor Day, crash rates historically increase. Let’s work together to keep everyone safe on the road!
